Sweet Morphine

A sharp thump becomes the pain.
The pressure throbs within.
I relinquish everything
To this terrible ache.

The burn is bittersweet
As it goes into the vein.
The numbness spreads in
Warm waves vanishing the pain.

Synthetic Rush

I need something to quicken my pulse.
Life has become a synthetic rush
To get through the next step, the next night.
I can’t even fake an adrenaline high.
I’m drained,
And dead inside like a flower without rain.
It doesn’t hurt; I don’t bleed…
I just…need.

A dull strain of misery that strikes
A crescendo once in a while…
Like it has been miles since I last
Laughed.
There’s no fire in my belly or flame in
My soul as if a thief stole away with
My one candle.

All my affirmation gone, but still I
Manage a death-grip on confidence which
Took a lifetime to muster.
Why life, have you lost your luster?
I’ll find a path back to the day.
One at a time, then more, eventually
It will leak back into my core.
I shed the sadness long ago
And scars still fading slow, but sure.
Who couldn’t use a pick-me-up or a cure?
I’d rather grow in the process of
Finding my way back on my own…and I will.

Morning’s First Pee

MORNING’S FIRST PEE
IS FILLED WITH GLEE
IT’S SUCH A RELIEF
THAT GLORIOUS RELEASE.
THEN YOU’RE DONE…
SO ENDS THE FUN.
NOW YOU MUST FLUSH
AND BEGIN THE DAY’S RUSH.

Sequel To Blues

Mirror image
The moonrise was made of lies
of light stolen from the sun’s eyes
Laying low in clouds of the skies
of darkened blankets not warm, but wise.

And I…I searched for those blues
those hues that color the soul of my muse.
It was no use; the moon didn’t hold true
to the you I found in the breaking news
of the sunrise.

Terribly Two

He is terribly two
Terribly quick and terribly cute
Allbyhimself independence is his aim
This stubbly blonde fireball of
Energetic commands

He is terribly two
Striking blue eyes of serious hue
Hiding traits yet to surface
Inside this two and a half foot frame
Playfully stands

Him. He is two.
Fast he grows in inches so small
We dare not notice his vanishing
Twoness-changing to three
But for now – two is not so terrible.

Sit back as I write
I’ll paint for you a dream.
Fantastic words of wonder
Compose the colors of the scene.

Sentences so vivid
They strongly seem alive
Let my words wield certain power
That HATE may sheathe the knife.

Core Worthless

Is it pumping blood or bleeding…
This heart within my chest?
I’m inclined to think it’s only
Keeping me alive at best.

Cut me and dare me to feel it
I’m tired of being numb,
Tired of aspiring to nothing,
Weary of days without a crumb.

Same old boring quatrains…
Repeats of rhyming verse…
Emotions lost in wasted page…
Proves this heart’s of little worth.

So is it pumping blood or bleeding…
It doesn’t matter much anymore…
No one really understands
What rocks me to the core.

Burden

Oh Night.
What deep things hide within
the harbor of your heart?
Relations camouflaged and
hidden in the blackest dark.

Do secrets untold define
the makings of a lie?
As you challenge tradition
and “normalcy” defy

There is no way to justify
the darkness of this road
I can only offer an
Extra shoulder for the load.

Re: High Flight Attn: Pilot Officer Magee 3-28-03

I, too, have slipped the bonds of Earth,
And tasted what I could of mirth.
Riding upon a giant’s back, I…
Felt the wing`ed lift of flight,
And met with night above the clouds
Where distant light is the only sound.
Chin in chest, I watched amazed
Through Carolina Blue and Chicago haze.
I found there’s poetry and song
Above the Earth and clouded throng.
Higher than birds, almost higher than air
So close to heaven; in the Angels’ own lair…
Where men both free and brave have trod
I, too, have touched the face of God.

The Power of the Pen

Red sunset

The pen is mightier
so they say,
Yet I cannot see how.
Doth the pen draw reddest blood?
Death demands it now.

Truly can the written word
Sheathe the sword the HATE?
What of peace
can ink proclaim?
The stillness needed late?

The pen is mightier
so they say,
I’m willing to believe
that words can draw life’s own blood,
and leave the rest to grieve.

Thrust Me Toward The Sun

Thrust me toward the sun
As a father lifts a child.
Raise me as your voice
That despair might leave for a while.

Wash over me like water
White with river rock and wave.
Deafen me with silence.
Peace is what I crave.

Weaken me like sickness.
Fall upon me as sleep.
Drug my mind with oblivion.
Let me not incline to weep.

Thrust me toward the sun.
Light dispel the dark.
Raise me out of shadow.
Let not despair leave a mark.

In The Wings

Big surprise
6-19-10

Heartbreak waits for me
In the shadow, in the wings.
Brought on sometimes by myself;
More often it’s someone else.

I fall hard and quick and fast
Into a smoldering pile of ash,
And ne’er like a Phoenix rise,
But crumble to a swift demise.

Heartbreak hardens my outer shell;
Bids me fight both tooth and nail;
Turns me into someone else
Until there is nothing left.

Pieces of me so slowly die.
I wear a smile that is a lie,
And yet in hope I reside
That love might grow and cease to hide.

Blues

Blue Image1-17-04

IN THE SUNRISE, THERE WERE BLUES THAT REMINDED ME OF YOUR
EYES, AND I WANTED TO DIP IN FOUNTAINS TO WATCH THAT RIPPLE
EFFECT RECREATE THE TIES OF DARK MYSTERY THAT MAKE FOR ME
A WARM PLACE IN YOUR SOUL.

I HID MY HEART IN SHADOWS AND DARK SO YOU WOULDN’T SEE
HOW APART MAKES ME BLEED…I NEED YOU LIKE WARMTH, LIKE
THE COMFORT AND QUIET REST THAT MY SOUL SIPS FROM THE TEPID
POOLS OF YOUR BLUE EYES.

I SEE IN YOU WHAT IS REAL, WHAT IS TRUE CAN’T HIDE BEHIND
AND THROUGH THE DOORS OF YOUR BEING I HAVE PASSED INTO
PLACES WHERE WE ARE NO LONGER TWO, BUT ONE IN FLESH, IN
EVERY WAY WE MESH.

IN THE SUNRISE, THERE WERE BLUES THAT REMINDED ME OF YOUR
EYES, AND YOU TOUCHED THE FAR-OFF ISLE WHERE THE DEEPER PARTS
OF ME LIE WHERE I SAVED MY FRAGILE LIFE IN HOPES FOR TIME TO
STAND IDLE FOREVER…
ONCE I FOUND YOU.

3 O’ Clock

Clock ImageTHREE O’ CLOCK
IS SUCH A CROCK
A.M. OR P.M.
IT STILL DOESN’T ROCK
LULL BY DAY
SLEEPLESS AT NIGHT
TIME’S WAY TO SAY
IT’S JUST FOR SPITE
HERE’S A TOAST
LIFT YOUR GLASS HIGH
AND SAY WITH A SIGH
THAT THREE O’ CLOCK
IS SUCH A CROCK
“HERE, HERE.”
